Sudowrite provides several features that can assist with tasks like coming up with plot twists, developing complex characters, or planning your narratives. It's an excellent tool for anyone keen on writing more compelling stories.
Sudowrite is based on GPT-3.5 and GPT-4. Its model generates text by predicting the next most probable word, one word at a time. So it's unlikely Sudowrite could plagiarise texts.
An AI writing assistant designed to assist you in writing captivating narratives and overcoming writer's block.
What is NovelAI?
NovelAI is an AI tool created to assist in writing, storytelling, and even creating novels. NovelAI uses advanced algorithms to create human-like writing that mirrors your style, which can be especially helpful if you are a beginner.
The AI adapts to your input while maintaining your perspective and writing style. You can create exciting stories with AI, engage in text-based games, and make AI-generated images - all in one place.
NovelAI also has a great and user-friendly interface that makes it quick and enjoyable to create interesting stories.
An advanced AI tool designed to assist in writing, storytelling, and even creating entire novels.
Sudowrite vs. NovelAI: Key Differences
Let's take a look at the key differences between Sudowrite and NovelAI.
Quality of AI-Generated Text
Both AI writing tools excel when it comes to creating exciting stories.
NovelAI has a Storyteller mode designed to help you build engaging narratives. You kick things off with a prompt or concept, and the AI turns this into a detailed, organized story that follows your initial idea.
On the other hand, Sudowrite makes story generation simple by just placing the cursor at the end of your text and hitting the Write button. The AI then takes over, continuing to develop your story for you.
The output quality from both tools is impressive, making them excellent options for generating engaging narratives.
I copied the same input to both tools and compared the results. Here's the intro to the story that we will use 👇
In the heart of London, seasoned detective duo Constable Tony Reeves and Inspector Jon Williams found themselves staring into the empty glass case that once cradled the infamous diamonds. It was the centerpiece of the British Museum, an invaluable artifact that had vanished without a trace during the previous night's annual gala.
Sudowrite generated two different outputs for us. Here, you can take a look:
We can choose the one we prefer and quickly integrate it into our text editor. Both outputs show the real strength of AI in creating narratives.
But what about NovelAI? I copied the exact text into the Storyteller mode and asked AI to continue the story.
NovelAI created a shorter output, which consisted of just two sentences. But it did this quicker than Sudowrite. To see more AI-written text, I pressed the Send button multiple times, and here's what came out:
The white text was created by the AI, but to get all of this, I had to press the Send button several times.
The AI producing shorter bits of writing doesn't really bother me. In fact, for some people, this could be an advantage because it allows you to maintain constant control over your story.
But I also had to click the Undo button several times because I wasn't always pleased with what NovelAI generated.
Despite both AI story generators being capable of crafting solid writing, it took me more time to get the results I wanted with NovelAI. That's why Sudowrite comes out on top in this comparison.
Writing Style and Tone: Customization Options
Both Sudowrite and NovelAI offer some degree of customization in writing settings. Sudowrite lets you select output length from 50 to 250 words and adjust the creativity level. You can also include key details.
NovelAI provides the option to modify the style and tone of the produced text, allowing you to mimic various styles like "19th Century Romance" and "H.P. Lovecraft", among others.
In this aspect, NovelAI offers more versatility with its style suggestions for AI-generated text, making it a more flexible choice.
Sudowrite shines when it comes to creativity thanks to two impressive features:
Describe: This is an ideal tool for creating your characters, illustrating beautiful environments, and setting up the scenes where your story unfolds.
Simply select the text you want to elaborate on, press the Describe button, and choose the best suggestion that suits your narrative.
Brainstorm: To use this feature, select the right template and feed the AI with a brief, optional context and examples. The AI responds by producing a range of creative ideas for your selection.
Both of these tools are very effective. Describe can help you create detailed character descriptions, while Brainstorm can help with plot twists, world-building, and additional explanations.
While NovelAI lacks a direct Brainstorm equivalent, it offers a Text Adventure Mode. In this mode, you steer the story by giving the AI prompts or commands.
The AI then generates responses to your inputs, resulting in dynamic and captivating narratives that evolve with your decisions.
Although it's not exactly the same, I've found that interacting with the AI in a game-like fashion can be a lot of fun and often sparks inspiration.
Overall, I think that Sudowrite takes the lead in terms of idea generation.
Both Sudowrite and NovelAI have excellent user interfaces, presenting only the necessary tools without any distracting elements, and both allow for the customization of their editors.
Sudowrite allows you to change the font, text size, line spacing, and theme. Its text editor is minimalist but includes all the essential features for a seamless writing experience.
NovelAI, on the other hand, provides even more options. For example, you can enable tips that appear below the editor during your writing process to inspire you with ideas.
Sudowrite's interface is simpler, which might be easier for some people, but NovelAI has more options to play around with. It's difficult to say which one has the best user experience because it really depends on what each person prefers.
AI Image Generation
Both of these tools have AI Image Generation. With Sudowrite, you can use something called Canvas. It's a space where you are able to create visual story outlines. You can make notes on special cards, add details about characters or scenes, and then ask the AI to make a picture out of it.
On the other hand, NovelAI has a more complex AI Image Generator. It allows you to turn your written characters and scenes into drawings using advanced image models.
This way, you can add pictures to parts of your stories, which makes your work more fun and engaging.
While I like the idea of Canvas in Sudowrite, I think NovelAI is better for making images. The results were good, and I appreciated being able to customize the pictures.
Both tools offer free trials, but there are differences in their pricing models.
Sudowrite offers three pricing plans:
- Hobby & Student: starts at $10/month, you get 30,000 words per month.
- Professional: starts at $20/month, you get 90,000 words.
- Max: starts at $100/month, you get 300,000 AI words per month.
NovelAI also offers three paid pricing plans:
- Tablet: $10/month, includes an increased number of monthly credits and new features, like Image Generation
- Scroll: $15/month, offers more monthly credits
- Opus: $25/month, offers more monthly credits, unlocks all features and gives you access to the best AI storyteller
NovelAI costs a little bit less because you can pay $10 each month, while Sudowrite's $10 per month price is only available if you pay for a whole year upfront.
Which AI Storyteller is For You?
Picking the right tool can be tricky. If you love writing exciting stories, Sudowrite is probably a better fit. Why? Mostly because it helps you write stories faster than NovelAI and has more useful storytelling features.
When I used Sudowrite, I found the Describe and Brainstorm functions extremely helpful, and they made my writing process much quicker. I also liked how Sudowrite gives you a few different options so you can choose the one that fits you best.
On the other hand, NovelAI is a bit cheaper and offers AI-generated images. For just $10 a month, you can use its handy storytelling features and make your own images.
So, if you're writing more for fun, don't need to come up with lots of content, and also want to be able to create AI illustrations, NovelAI might be a better fit.
Both these tools have their own special features, so I think it's a good idea to try both (they both have a free version) to see which one you like more.
I've been using Sudowrite a lot lately, and I'm really happy with the results, but I also use NovelAI every now and then, especially for the Text Adventure Game.
